Dentophobia
We believe patients when they tell us “I hate the dentist.”
We understand that dental appointments can produce anxiety for some patients and want to help make all patients comfortable.
Dr. Aliisha offers safe, effective options to make dental visits comfortable for patients with anxiety: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) alone, or a combination of an oral sedative plus nitrous oxide.
What nitrous oxide (laughing gas) does
You breathe a sweet-tasting gas through a small mask.
It produces mild to moderate relaxation and reduces anxiety quickly.
Effects begin within minutes and wear off soon after the mask is removed, so recovery is fast.
You remain awake, can follow instructions, and usually remember the visit.
It’s adjustable during the procedure to keep you comfortable.
What an oral sedative does
The sedative is a pill taken about 30–40 minutes before the appointment
It produces deeper relaxation and may cause drowsiness or partial amnesia for the procedure.
Because it stays in your system longer, you’ll need someone to drive you home and plan for recovery time.
Why combine an oral sedative with nitrous oxide
The pill provides a baseline of calmness before you arrive.
Nitrous oxide is added during the procedure to fine-tune comfort and manage unexpected anxiety or discomfort.
The combination is especially helpful for patients with strong dental phobia, a history of difficulty getting through dental work, or those needing longer or more complex treatment.
Safety and monitoring
We review your medical history, current medications, and any allergies before recommending sedation.
Dr. Aliisha and our team monitor you throughout the visit (oxygen levels, breathing, comfort).
Dosages are tailored to your health, age, and anxiety level.
Not everyone is a candidate for oral sedatives; we’ll discuss alternatives if necessary.
Before your appointment
Follow pre-visit instructions carefully: fasting or timing of the pill, whether to bring a driver, and which medications to continue or pause.
Tell us about pregnancy, sleep apnea, lung disease, heart conditions, or recent substance use—these affect sedation choices.
What to expect after
With nitrous oxide alone: you recover quickly and can drive yourself home.
With a pill plus nitrous oxide: you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you as recommended.
